Liway film screening & discussion with Director Kip Oebanda

Sampayan Atbp. is happy to announce that they are launching their new project: Film Screening Discussions featuring Liway, a 2018 Filipino independent film directed by Kip Oebanda.

The film is centred on the experiences of Dakip, the child of a prisoner of war, Commander Liway, who led guerilla groups within the Negros region. Through his eyes, we witness how his mother tries to give him a normal childhood against the backdrop of an extremely unconventional situation.

Sampayan Atbp. is an East and Southeast Asian intersectional collective focusing on merging advocacy, art practice and activism.

In the wake of the landslide election of Ferdinand Marcos Jr, son and namesake of the late dictator, the collective believes that it is vital for the Filipino diaspora to share stories regarding the violent events that occurred during the Martial Law era.

The screening will be on Saturday, 28th May at 2 pm at SOAS University of London. Following the screening, there will be a live Zoom Q&A with director Kip Oebanda. Sampayan sees this as an opportunity for the audience to discuss the importance of such movies, along with the Filipinx diaspora’s role in story-telling, along with other points of discussion.

This is a free event open to all, but the collective is asking people to donate however much or little, if they can, to keep this programme going. Please use the QR Link on the poster below for donations through PayPal.

This project is in collaboration and supported by: _inventory Platform, Anakbayan UK, Filipino Domestic Workers Association (FDWA) UK, Bahaghari UK, and Gabriela UK.
